What is the difference and uses between Licorice Root and Calamus Root.....

Hello Everyone,

Not too long ago, but unfortunately while I was in the care facility with my broken ankle I was asked about Calamus and Licorice Root,  what are they used for or how can they be used.

And I'm getting questions from my family members as well about herbs as they come up to the point where I'm getting a little overwhelmed.

So I am going to post from time to time about different herbs some which you can grow and some which you can purchase.

So let's start with these two, Calamus and Licorice Root-----

Both are herbs but each has their own different properties in the use of Conjure, yet both are used in either for controlling or dominating others, so in some ways they are very much the same and yet there are some differences.

Licorice Root is used to gain power over and control of someone (an individual) that would include to change their mind.

Calamus Root is used primarily to control a situation as well as or dominate a person.

Calamus is seen more often in spells and rituals than Licorice because by some it’s considered the softer “sister” between the two.   Calamus exerts a more sweeter, subtle, compelling control while Licorice is more of a stern-demanding control.   They are both potent roots in the use of control and some practitioners like to use them together, but they can be used separately depending upon what kind of control one wants to exert.

However some practitioners feel that the reverse is also correct,  my Granny use to say that sometimes some herbs, plants or roots seem to work differently with each practitioner,   it’s what works best for you and you can only find out when you use them individually.  But most prefer to use them together.

So let’s talk about the different properties of Calamus Root and Licorice Root:

Let’s start with Calamus Root:

Calamus Root, also known as Sweet Flag, is a perennial root herb that grows in some parts of Europe, Asia and North America.  It’s mentioned in the book of Exodus and is supposed to be one of the ingredients in ritual incense. The Bible also mentions about the root’s stimulating and visionary effect. This visionary effect was also recognized by the Native Americans, who considered the herb sacred. The Ancient Chinese believed that Calamus put one’s energy into balance, allowing one to resonate as a whole. They would chew on Calamus root while breathing deeply, fully and slowly to make anxiety and panic subside.
(Personally I would not do that because there may be some unknown effects that could adversely affect a person)

It is alleged by conjure workers that using this root gives to the worker or user, control over a person or situation. Because of this belief it is a common ingredient in formulas and spells used for controlling others, and it put into oils and powders including Commanding,  Bend-Over, and Follow Me Boy as well as some love formulas.

It can be used in a conjure or mojo bag filled with other Love-Herbs, so that a person, man or woman, can be Dominate in a Love Affair.  Other uses is burning it as an incense while doing a domination candle-spell or to mix it with Commanding Powder then sprinkle it around a room where they will meet with someone they want or wish to control, command or dominate, some people will put it into a mojo bag before going into a mediation situation so they will get their own way.  (especially in divorce cases)

It is known for other spell uses in healing, balance, protection, luck and prosperity. Growing the plant in your garden is said to bring good luck and aids in the protection of the property.  It is claimed that using Calamus root gives protection against an enemy.

To use to increase good luck and attract abundance and help in healing and protection of a person or property, sprinkle the powdered root around the outside perimeter of your home or property to protect from robbers.

Another way to increase one’s finances is to cut up dried calamus root and place them in the corners of the rooms of your house or business to ensure that you have more than enough money when you are worrying about your finances.

On a more practical level it is believe to also discourage fleas and other unwanted pests.  Some years ago a friend of mine lived in Taiwan and his housekeeper would put up here and there around the house  calamus grass tied together in small bundles and outside their doors in the summer months especially during the Dragon Boat Festival to protect the house from a summer pestilence.  He told me that parts of Taiwan can be very swampy, considering that it’s a subtropical country and during the summer months various diseases develop in various towns and villages.  It was traditionally believed that putting these bundles would keep the “sickness” away---the Chinese called calamus “shi chang pu.”

Mrs. Washington who use to live in the South, told me of how she and her Mama would also use calamus as a wash (boiled in hot water) and would wash down their steps and floors and put finely cut pieces all around the house and at the window screens.   The story about Brer Rabbit’s mojo hand could have been a form of keeping fleas and misquotes off of a person, much like how my granny would use eucalyptus leaves under her rugs to keep fleas away.

It can also be used or burned as an incense to encourage spiritual, emotional and physical healing.

Because Calamus is used for control, many practitioners do not like to use it in a honey jar or a marriage spell because if you use it in a love spell you would be using it to control and dominate the other person.  But if you do then such a honey jar would just have a more controlling/dominating bent to it but you have to remember that it would be interfering with the other person’s free will.

On the medical side Calamus root was considered medicinal.  Some herbalists would powder the root and mix it into a glass of white wine to help settle an upset stomach. Chewing the candied roots would help soothe a sore throat or calm a persistent cough but only get this from a licensed herbalist, it is not wise to self-medicate.

In herbal use medical science has on and off listed Calamus root as being toxic, that is if a lot of it is ingested, if that happens then it encourages the growth of cancerous tumors,  but if taken only in very small doses and only occasionally one should not have that problem---but again do not self-medicate and only get from a licensed herbalist.

Because of this Calamus root is banned or prohibited in some countries or states because of this possible toxic reaction, if you find that it is banned in your area you can substitute Licorice-root, Cubeb Berries, Master Root or Knot-weed.

If you like to grow an herb garden, planting and growing Calamus would make a great addition.

Now let’s talk about Licorice Root:

This root is used for flavoring and also in herbal medicine.  It’s magical properties in control or dominating is much like Calumus Root and would be used the same way.   So except for the type of domination or control that you want there is very little difference in its application.

The root of the Licorice tree must be used in dried form. The first candies were made using Licorice and the process was quite simple then, simply boiling the Licorice and then adding some sugar and anise oil after its been boiled after a while. The reason to use anise oil as an addition is to improve the taste of the licorice root since its original state the taste is quite delicate.  I have chewed Licorice root and it is flavorful but light and not over whelming.

Licorice root medically relieves coughs and arthritis. There are various uses of the root especially as an herbal medicine. The root has been compared to codeine when it comes to stopping coughs and bringing up phlegm to clear the lungs. In China, the Licorice root is used in the treatment for arthritis as they claim it has essential anti-inflammatory components better known as saponins. The root helps in the cure of bronchitis and colds especially when taken in the form of a special tea.  I’ve known some people to chew the root to bring relief to mild ulcers---but its best to get professional help for ulcers.

Sometimes it’s used as a tranquilizer and allegedly balances nervous system and stimulates liver functions. But be careful drinking it as a tea or eating it in long term usage (over 3 months) it could cause liver damage.

On the other hand, the root has been associated with enhancement of fertility and increase of sexual energy among the humans and is used to bind love charms.

Now to the practical side of Licorice root especially if you want to grow it:

Licorice (sometimes spelled  Liquorice)  come from the root of Glycyrrhiza glabra, from which a sweet flavor can be extracted. The licorice plant is a legume related to beans and peas and is native to southern Europe and parts of Asia. It is not related to Anise, Star Anise or Fennel, which are the source of superficially similar flavoring compounds.

It is an herbaceous perennial, growing to 3 feet in height, the flowers are purple to pale whitish blue.  Licorice grows best in deep, fertile, well-drained soils, with full sun, and is harvested in the autumn, two to three years after planting.   In modern times, liquorice extract is produced by boiling licorice root and subsequently evaporating most of the water. In fact, the name 'liquorice'/'licorice' is derived from the Old French licoresse and from the Ancient Greek glukurrhiza, meaning 'sweet root'.

I knew of a young lady that had been affected by the use of both roots and she wanted to get free, so Granny did the 13 herb uncrossing bath on her,  after the 13th day (it was one bath a day) we did the Egg Cleansing spell, in the meantime my uncle went to see the guy who was dominating her, on a pretext about doing some work, when the fellow wasn’t looking my uncle put some hot foot powder on the threshold of the guy’s house.   Then Granny did a dominating spell on the guy so he’d leave the girl alone and leave town.   It worked but it took a little time.      Then she created a poppet or doll of the girl so that anything attempted to be done on the young lady would not affect her.   As I said it took time but it worked.

In doing the work Licorice much the same as Calamus Root, but again it depends upon what kind of spell or ritual work you want to do,  sometimes it’s best to use only a little instead of a lot just to be a sweet and gentle persuader.

But you have to remember that if you want to force someone to fall in love with you, and it really is not meant to be, then you are interfering with someone’s free will and it can backlash on you, so again think carefully on what you want to do.

Bright Blessings,
Ms. Q

  1. This is a great article Mrs. Q. Very informative. Thank you for writing this.

I remember before your accident you wrote that you were going to post an article about coercive love spells and I hope you are still going to post it, as I've been looking forward to reading it, please!

I'm so glad you are home and recovering well, thank heaven.

    1. Hello Katie,

I am glad to be home but we are going through a very hot heat wave, with wild fires and outages.

I do not have air conditioning so it’s fans and staying on the cool side of the house.

I hope to be able to do the article soon, but I’ve been getting a lot of demand on other subjects as well.

But you’re right coercive love spells should be discussed.

Because one needs to consider if this is a love spell to save a marriage so to bring the partner to the table to talk or is this a love spell to have someone fall in love with you when it’s really interfering with the other person’s free will.

I’ve had discussions about this with some of my friends who are practitioners and it’s sort of divided but not by much.

I’ll see what I can do.

      Bright Blessings,

    1. Hello My Dear,

I’m sorry but my blog site is not that sophisticated to have a search function.

There are the tags and archive links that will take you to certain postings or certain subjects.

If my “blind in one eye” comment was in a post maybe you can find it but if it was in a reply to a question or comment even I would be at a loss to find it.

I did mention that a St. Clare (St. Clara) candle is burned for clarity and for illness and problems associated with the eyes, was that it?

Perhaps you could tell me what it is you are referring to with the “blind in one eye” comment, and maybe I can rack my brain as to what I was referring to.

I mean I could have been referring to someone who was so drunk they couldn’t see straight if they tried, or a person whose mind is so mentally closed that they would not or refuse to discern the truth or to open their mind to reason or the truth or referring to a careless person who refuses to see ahead of themselves due to their actions.

So it all depends in what context I was using that comment.

  4. It was in regards to a spiritual issue. Be blind in one eye wàa what the spirit worker told me when his spirits looked over me.

    1. Hello My Dear,

In regards to spiritual issues, one needs to turn to the bible for it has references to being blind as well as being “blind in one eye”.

      From Matt 6:22-23, KJV

The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness.

In the old Testament an idiom emerged out this idea is that a person with a "good eye" is generous — he sees the needs of others and wants to help them. In contrast, one with a "bad eye" or "evil eye" is blind to the needs of others and is greedy and focused on his own self-gain.

We find these idioms in Proverbs:

Prov. 22:9 He who is generous (literally, has a good eye) will be blessed, for he gives some of his food to the poor.

Prov. 23:6 Do not eat the food of a stingy man (literally, an evil eye), do not crave his delicacies; for he is the kind of man who is always thinking about the cost.

Prov. 28:22 A man with a bad eye hastens after wealth and does not know that want will come upon him.

      Prov 12
The good man has not an eye of darkness that cannot see; for he shows mercy to all men, sinners though they may be, and though they may plot his ruin.

In the New Testament Jesus frequently made a comparison between those who were physically blind and those that were spiritually blind.

The “Blind leading the blind” is a scriptural reference indicating that Christians were not to act in a way that would lead non-believers astray (acting in a hypocritical way).

The Bible also frequently used the analogy of being blind to being spiritually lost.

      Again from Matthew 15:13-14

He replied, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots. Leave them; they are blind guides. If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit.”

      Mat:23:24
You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel

But it’s possible that the Spirits were referring to this chapter:

      From Luke 6:39-42

He also told them this parable: “Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? A student is not above his teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher. Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”

Or from this Chapter from John 9:35-41

Jesus said, “for judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.” Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, “What? Are we blind too?” Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.”

It’s possible that the spirits were saying that you are being blind to that which is around you, you sort of see it (one good eye) and yet you don’t see it or reject it (blind in the other eye).

It’s possible that the spirits were trying to warn you of blindly following someone or some bad advice as well.

I know this from personal experience, I never go into anything blindly, I’ve learned to use my eyes as well as my mind to quickly process something, lots of times I’ve seen things that were dangerous and would try to step in to avoid a bad situation only to be told to mind my own business---sadly those who didn’t listen to me, well let’s say they had a very painful and damaging experience.

I’ve been called “chicken”, “coward” etc. only for others to discover that I did the right thing because I was not blind to what was happening or what could happen, because of that I avoided being involved with some nasty folks.

Perhaps that is what the spirits were trying to say.

I hope my reply has been of some help.

      Bright Blessings,

    3. I found it. Its in jan 2017.
Things did not improve cause i did not get the will thing. Im not sure what to do. Im at thw end of my rope. I qanna chanhe my fate but do not know how.

I am the same guy who tried to come up with a new idea to ens political division in the usa.

The goods news is i ve made some progress. I had a paper written about abuse
Im trying to change it left vs right to abusive vs non abusive.

Hope i am not boring you with thia.

    4. Hello My Dear,

No you're not boring me, anyone who works for change to improve things is working very hard.

But I see that the comment I made was that I was "Flying Blind" which means I didn't have enough information to know if it was a spiritual issue or a material or physical issue.

"Flying Blind" is an old Aviator reference to not being able to see out of the cockpit any recognizable landmarks.

So it forces them to rely on instruments and sometimes the instruments are not accurate.

The worse situation is when the weather conditions are horrible and the instruments have failed.

So in essence you are trying to improve things for yourself but not knowing what to do you are "Flying Blind".

I don't know if you believe in the power of prayer, but I do recommend that you pray to St. Clare aka St. Clara to be able to mentally see things clearly, to slowly find the answers to what you need.

Sometimes the way to see is to ask someone who is knowledgeable in the field of expertise that you need. St. Clare can help guide you to that.

      For in the Bible
(Matthew 7:7-8 King James Version (KJV))

"Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:

For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened."

Keep asking, keep looking, because eventually someone will be able to give you the guidance you need.

Talk to a minister or a guidance counselor, for assistance.

But if there is one thing my Granny taught me is that sometimes when I want something to go the way I want it to go, it won't happen because for our life lesson it may need to go a different way and we have to work with that.

By understanding that I've found that things work out a lot better in the long run.

I hope I've been able to help you with this some what.

Do speak to a minister or guidance counselor to help you further.

      Bright Blessings,

  5. Exscuse me for typos. As for working with spirits. I was told to avoid spirit work or magic. I meant I wanna change fate. As for life lesson? I do hot doubt it. But not all of us handle lessons correctly and get burned for it.

Here is a sample of what I got. Its not as much I want to due to situation, but it is a start. https://www.docdroid.net/xKkjCeV/abuse-tactics-draft-1.pdf#page=2

Its about verbal abuse. If I were in better shape, I would put it together nearly and in depth. I cannot. If you like it, I wish to have it spread and inpire the correct folks who are able to work on the concept further. I hope its not seen as spell begging. Merely asking if you like the concept, please help.

As for licorice. I have heard it reduces the libido. Can it be used in magic to calm a person sex drive down or make them lose interest?

    1. Dear SouthOrNorth,

About licorice calming the libido, there have been studies on it because of its action on Steroids primarily because of the active ingredient, glycerrhizinic acid. But again it can cause liver damage within 3 months if not carefully monitored.

So if you are looking into that I would talk to a physician who understands the chemical workings and interaction of the root on the human body.

I’ve read the page that you posted and both my Hubby and I have used the “Agree to Disagree” method, and end any argument or debate, by giving each of us time to mull things over both of us come to an agreement. But we’ve been together for a long, Long, LONG time and we’ve learned it works.

It doesn’t work with everyone, especially with people who want to be dominate or be in control of either a situation or over me, I’ve encountered that type as well and have found for my own safety and sanity to simply drop them out of my life, when that happens I’ve had people ask me why and I am honest and will say something like “I didn’t like the way he/she was handling it and felt it better for me to leave (or disengage with the project)”.

Of course that’s hard to do in a working environment with a co-worker, but I’ve done it in a way that they wind up looking like a fool whereas I look like I did things just right.

It takes time and experience to learn that.

This would not be spell begging as you call it, but more like learning a functioning dialog to communicate better without any negative results.

It really comes under more like “the art of communication” which is a psychology aspect of life towards positive results and interaction.

The negative reaction by people at meetings, marches, protests etc. is what causes riots, because no one takes the time to be what I call an active listener and behave in a “civilized” manner.

Unfortunately I have found especially among teens and 20-somethings they react on an emotional level and not on a logical level, and that leads to riots.

Sometime ago I was carefully explaining a policy to a 20-something and he went off on me calling me names and in a rage, I just stood there and let him rant, waving away fellow staffers. I didn’t say a word, when he was done thinking he made his point I said to him quietly “If you had let me finish I could show you how we could resolve this in your favor but right now there are 2 very big police officers behind you, so please go with them peacefully.”

As they led him off, people applauded me and a few hours later, several bouquets of flowers and boxes of chocolate showed up in appreciation for how I handled things.

But this is something I learned from talking to my parents, and grandparents and from experience.

You’ve been told to not work with spirits or magic and for many people without a good strong “grounding” (either through family, health or stress to name a few conditions) it is a wise thing to not do any workings, so I recommend that they wear either a blessed St. Michael medal or a blessed St. Benedict medal to help shield them from spirits, and to simply do prayers to help them get through a situation. In one of my earlier posts I posted the St. Michaels prayer for protection. Look it up through my archives and print out a copy for yourself.

In praying to a Christian Saint or Angel or Jesus you are really calling upon an aspect of the Divine Presence, God if you will, to help you, it’s not working with spirits or magic it’s simply prayer and a sincere desire to help heal yourself.

And there is nothing wrong in calling upon God.

  6. For the agree to disagree option. That works if the person is mentally stable, honest, cares to coperate and sees on same team. This is not the case with many people and not so with the left. I like to use same method, but it works best with wise and mature folks. Which is very rare. That not the point. The point is if the dictomony is altered, it would force change. Which would force folks to fix stuff. If you are afraid to click the link, i under stand why. I would copy and paste but it is 25 pages long. Its an easy read but still. It shows how political correctness is no different then racist speech. No i am saying I am changing from "left vs right" to "abusive vs non abusive".
If you have any ideas on how to change the dialouge from left vs right to something else, i am open suggestions. Im going with abuse cause it shuts down the lefts sense moral superior, thus taking the fight out of them. As for the police man? There are cases folks in power are siding with such histronics. See battle of berkely and police chief as a good example.

I read about your ballet. What happen according to chaos magic is you reached a state of gnosis. As long one gets to that state (doesnt matter how) magic becomes possible.something to think about.

As for me? I tried st claires prayer. It didnt work and not due to saint claire. It was due to me not understanding the will thing. Either they were empty hearted or had fear fueling it.

Now i understand but for wrong reasons. I really dont know what to do. It feels as if the process is did and done and according to a few readers I trust, it seems to be so.

Im also the one who asked about finding answers when so much is unknown.

Sorry. It seems everytime we chat, its all about me. I hope i dont seem crazy.

I guess what I am looking for is how to help myself and find my own qnswers when they dont seem to be forth coming

    1. Hello,

No need to copy and paste this too me, I have a friend of mine who will print it out for me.

To be honest, and maybe I'm not feeling well, but this is a far bigger issue that goes even beyond what you are even searching for.

I've been to Berkley, I had gone to hear a controversial person speak and was nearly killed by a "student" when they tried to set fire to the hall, it was a police officer who rescued me, not any of the students who seemed to think it was alright to let an elderly person get trampled.

I have to say that it is impossible to talk reason to an emotional mob when they are being fired up by "professional agitators".

They are liked panicked horses that will run into a burning barn instead of away from it.

It was found that by keeping professional agitators out of the mix, most mobs will calm down and start listening.

But we need to start teaching from a very early age to be active listeners and not re-actors, and this needs to start in kindergartner all the way through college.

We need to teach children to work with logic not with emotion, and this starts in the home and in the schools.

I think if you work from the abusive vs. non-abusive instead of political left and right, the message starts to get across, and then once understood transfer it to politics.

It's important to ask questions, and the answers are out there but sometimes it can take years to find them. I should know, I've been there.

      Bright Blessings,
      Ms. Q
