The Art of Candle "Talk"~Part 1 Dressing and Fixing A Candle~~~~

Dear Ms. Q,

"What is 'dressing a candle?' " "How do I do Candle spells?"   "My candle pops and sizzles, does that mean anything?"
"The flame on my candle is very high"  "My glass enclosed candle exploded? Am I hexed?"

Interpreting a candle's action is as old as fire divination, as a matter of fact it's as old as fire itself.

A lot of folks understand that candle spells can be effective but many of them do a candle spell without really understanding how to properly go about it.

Lirio: You know how to use candles?

Sarah: Yeah, you light the wick.

Lirio: [Smiles] More than that.  (From “The Craft”)

I used the quote from the movie “the Craft” for a reason, in a previous post I listed why some spells or rituals, especially those involving candles don’t work.

Most folks in an effort to bring about balance and harmony into their lives as a last measure, understandably turn to doing magick, there is nothing wrong with doing that, because it does focus on your needs to bring about that which is loving, kind, peaceful and prosperous into your life, which everyone deserves.

For many, just getting the right candle (i.e. color, saint, petition) and focusing on their intent can start the “ball rolling” and there can be success, but the more you do the work, you will see that sometimes there are “road blocks” or the energy seems to be wrong or tainted.

And that’s because lots of times folks want to jump into lighting the candle, doing their petition and seeing the results which they hope will be immediate.

But once you are into doing the work, the practice, especially over a period of time,  you find that there is a lot more involved,   so I’m going to do a series of posts on what I call “CANDLE TALK”    This way when you do a candle spell or ritual you’ll be doing it completely right from the very beginning.

LETS START WITH HOW TO CLEANSE, DRESS, FIX AND LIGHT A CANDLE.

Cleansing, Blessing and Dressing the candle

My Granny use to buy candles by the dozen now I’m talking about the old fashion taper candles or in some cases plumbers candles,   when candles were coming out in enclosed glass she’d buy 2 or 3 at a time, usually in white (later on in colors as her budget permitted), but because she knew that the candles were handled by different people, (in the making, the shipping, the stocking on shelves, etc.) she knew that these neutral objects (the candles) would pick up energy from these folks unintentionally, because everyone can have a bad day or a great day, and she didn’t want those energies on the candles clinging like invisible dust, so she’d “cleansed” them.

It wasn’t very difficult really, first she’d actually gently dust them off with a clean white cloth, (later on a disposable white paper towel) then she’d bless them with Holy Water (just a few sprinkles) and she’d say “I Exorcise thee O creature of hidden flame, from all that is bad (negative) and make you pure in your purpose, I bless thee O creature of hidden flame and make you ready to do your work,  In the name of the father, son and holy spirit” and she’d do the sign of the cross over them.

Now this was done to remove any negative energy as well as dirt or dust, so she’d clean them and bless them first, that way they’d be prepared to give added strength to the candles in ritual by purifying the energy influences.   She’d then would lock those candles away in a cupboard or pantry away from anything else until she was ready to use them.

She’d also do it to those tiny vigil lights that one burns in a small fire resistant glass cup in front of a religious statue,  when I was a little girl I thought Granny was a “clean freak” but later on I found out it was more than that especially in regards to spiritual work.

I do the same thing, but when I find an unusual candle that has never been used at a yard sale,  I will  dust it as best as I can then rinse it completely in cold water, then allow it to air dry away from the sun, then do what my Granny would do to spiritually cleanse them, then put it away in a cupboard until ready to use

Now prior to her actually activating the candle for ritual work she would “Dress” it first with a neutral oil such as virgin olive oil,  she told me that the  candle it had to be oiled (we now say 'dressed') before “fixing it” for burning it in a ritual.

The reason for dressing the candle prior to “fixing it” was/is to establish a psychic connection between the candle and the practitioner through a basic handling of the candle.

So when she would touch the candle during the dressing process she was psychically connecting to it and putting or charging it with her own energy or vibrations so that the candle would become an extension of her power and energy.

To do the initial dressing she would oil it with the olive oil like it was a magnet with a north and a south pole, the whole idea was that the energies of the North and South ends would meet in the middle, so taking a dab of the oil she would first stroke the candle from the top to the middle all the way around starting at the top part of the candle and always stroking in the same direction Top to Middle, top to middle.

Then she take another dab of oil and stroke the South end, bottom to the middle, bottom to the middle again in the same direction in simple single strokes.

She’d Never rub it up and down, it was always stroked in the same direction.  Dressing a candle is the phrase most often used to mean anointing the candle with oil.

Now a days folks will use a special oil to dress a candle like Abramelin  or Oil #20 to do it, but Granny always believe that olive oil was best.   Now if you don’t want to use olive oil you can use natural ones which can be obtained quite easily. Some occult suppliers will provide oils with exotic names. If a practitioner does not want to use these, you can use other oils from other sources, but I’ve found that olive oil is the best and most neutral type of oil followed by Abramelin or Oil #20.  (And we can thank S. L. MacGregor Mathers for introducing this into Western Mystic tradition)

To dress the candle with oil use your dominate hand, that is the hand that you write your signature with, most people are right handed so use your right hand, if your left handed then use your left hand, if you are one of those rare folks that are ambidextrous again use the hand that you usually sign your signature with.

Some folks however will dress a candle the opposite way, starting from the middle and going to the top and from the middle going down.

It depends upon what you are planning to call upon, to draw something to you or banish something away from you this is for your personal self.

Next come the FIXING of the Candle----

This is when the candle is now set or fixed for a particular purpose,   there are many different ways to start the fixing depending upon the type of candle work or spell you’re doing.

With tapers or pillar candles besides the color, you can carve symbols or a name or what you want on the candle, this can be done with either a clean square nail or if you are a pagan with a sacred knife, or in some instances a coffin nail.  It can be simple for money a dollar sign or what ever symbol in your country that represents money, you can include the amount if you like, if for love a heart and so on, or a hole carved in the bottom to insert a tiny petition,, again depending upon what the spell is about.

Some folks when they inscribe a candle, use the same directional procedure. To bring things toward you, write from the top to the middle, then from the bottom to the middle. If you are repelling something, reverse the procedure.   Frankly I find that a bit complicated so I do this to bring it to me I write it from top to bottom and to banish I write it from bottom to top, nothing half way.

So now the candle has been cleansed and in essence with holy water blessed, dressed, and with the symbols or words empowered, next is the anointing.

Prior to anointing and activating the candle the oil(s) (if you use more than one)  must be consecrated or prayed over before they are used this is important because some oils that are used in certain spells must have certain psalms said over them to properly activate their use .

And it is important to use oils to dress the candle that coincides with the spell you want to perform.

Now in anointing the candle it depends on whether you want to repel something from you (banished) or bring something to you or into your life will determine what you will do next.

To banish or repel something (poverty, a bad habit, illness) or someone (whomever is making your life miserable) take the particular oil that you will need to use and start at the base of the candle with oil for your purpose and stroke the oil from base to the top going all the way around the candle.

If you want to attract something to you, then you would then do the opposite and start at the top and stroke the oil to the base of the candle going all the way around it.

Visualize and concentrate what it is that you want done while doing this, and NEVER rub the oil of purpose back and forth as this would confuse the energies and nothing will happen or what you don’t want could happen.

Afterwards you may roll the candle in herbs that also will help with the type of spell you wish to perform especially if the spell calls to have the candle rolled in herbs or have the candle affixed with pins if the spell calls for it.    In some cases both, in that situation roll the herbs on first and if it’s to bring something to you roll the candle towards you, if it’s to repel or banish something from you then roll the candle away from you,  Never in a back and forth method.    Then if the spell calls for it you affix your pins.

Now this is for non-glass enclosed candles but what about glass enclosed candles.

PROCEDURES FOR GLASS ENCLOSED CANDLES

My Granny used glass enclosed candles for her work, she’d get them from a church store and this was back in the 1940’s they we’re not carried in metaphysical shops until the late 1960’s or early 70’s, now she’d used these candles in addition to her free standing candles, and these candles would have pictures of Saints on them.   And she was really Big on petitioning the saints.

Now she would cleanse them and bless them the same way that she’d do with free standing and figure candles,  but it was the Dressing and Fixing of them that would be different.

To get the candle charged with her energy she would dab a bit of olive oil on her finger and rub the wax clock wise around the wick and pushing her energy into it.   And then she’d put it in a dark cupboard and covered with a clean white cloth to keep them clean.

When she was ready to Fix the candle she’d take a dab of the oil of purpose and if was to bring in something she’d rub the oil clock wise, if it was to banish something she’d rub the oil counter-clockwise.

Then using one of those wooden sticks that women use to push back their cuticles, she’d use the pointed end to inscribe on the wax what she’d want, and then push the pointed end into the wax in the shape of a  triangle.   And then using an eyedropper drop a few drops of the oils into the holes made in the wax.

Sometimes she would do a very light sprinkling of herbs on the top, depending on the spell.

Later on I discovered on glass enclosed candles without pictures I could draw with a water resistant felt tip marker or using poster paint with a thin pointed brush. In a pinch I've used nail polish.  Of course I still would do the same thing in Dressing and Fixing the candle on the inside.

Now a days instead of an eye dropper you can use these tiny things called pipette’s that some perfumer’s use to test a scent, you can buy like 500 of them for a few dollars on the internet.

And in addition to herbs people have taken to using glitter on the glass enclosed candles not only the color glitter but the fancy one’s in the shape of shamrocks, angels, hearts, stars, even cat’s, ghosts, bats  and pumpkins.  If you're into that watch what shows up at your craft stores or local discount store especially the seasonal glitter shapes.

But you have to be careful to not drown the wick with oil or the glitter or herbs because it could become a fire hazard with the entire top of the candle catching fire.

Now a days some people will instead use a clean square nail or a needle to inscribe on the wax inside and use the nail or something long and pointed out of metal to push a hole into the wax.  Sometimes instead of 3 holes they would do 5  or 4 in the shape of a cross, it also depended on how many oils one would fix the candle with as well as the type of spell work.

Personally I prefer to use a wooden cuticle stick espeically for positive spells but I'd use a coffin nail for negative spells.

But it's up to the practitioner what they want to do or according to the spell work.

Now you are ready to light your candle-----

TO LIGHT THE CANDLE

Some folks are fussy about lighting a candle directly from a struck match (either a wood match or from a booklet of matches)  that is because of the ingredient of Sulfur,  some spells call for Sulfur some don’t,  the problem with Sulfur is that it can disrupt the planned magical workings.

I remember Granny would have these long thin wooden sticks and she’d would light these sticks from another plain candle and then light the Fixed candle, or if she had a thin taper candle she’d would light the fixed candle from it.

Later on when Bic lighters became popular Granny would ask for the "Sacred Bic", because it would be used to light the candle.

But with glass enclosed candles if you have to snuff them out because it’s dangerous to leave burning, as the wax would melt down it would be hard to light with a regular Bic, which is where a plain wooden stick or a bar be que Bic lighter would come in handy.

What I would do is if I used the long thin bar-be-Que matches I’d save the stick, remove the burnt end and save the rest of it for magical workings Fortunately my family never questioned me when I’d save those sticks.

There you have it --- to cleanse, bless, Dress, empower and Fix a candle for your magical workings, yeah it is more than just lighting the wick.  But at least you will be starting it right.

On my next post on CANDLE TALK  it will be about how to tell what your candle is telling you, because Candles Can Talk.

Blessings,
Ms. Q

P.S.  When I said to "banish an illness" I must stress that it would be in addition to going to your Doctor or Dentist,  Do Not Think that by doing a candle spell you will be cured,  that is not the purpose to do a candle spell for illness,  it is to help you get well WHILE you are Going to your Doctor, Dentist or receiving treatment for your condition.

If you are ill seek medical help immediately!

What are the different Candle styles Part 3 figure candles~~~

Dear Ms. Q,

Well to pick up where I left off,  I'll give you the second list of figure candles… But just as a side note, I have seen done in spell and ritual use, other types of candles that you’d find in a specialty shop such as heart shape candles and those in the shape of fruit, of course the turkey shape candles that you find for Thanksgiving,  and don’t forget any Christmas Candles as well, such as starts and moons and such.

By using your imagination and figuring out your intent, even these usual specialty candles could be used in a magickal way, either spells or rituals depending upon your intent.

For example a heart shaped candle could be used for a love spell, a star candle could be used for positive wishes, fruit for fertility, etc.   So don’t discount them even though they have not been purchased in a Magickal shop or web site.  All your mind and thoughts and what your intent is to guide you.

Candle Magick is one of the easiest and most effective ways to honor your Higher Power, call your Corners, meditate, change the energy of a space, cast a spell, contact your Spirit Guides, or simply set the mood for a ritual. It can also be used for Divination.

Candle Magick,  crosses nearly all cultures and religions. It is found in Wicca, Neopagan, Southern Hoodoo, Voudoun, Judaism, Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Christian Traditions. Candle uses are many and varied, and there are many wonderful books written that go into great detail.

Color in candles is a relatively new invention and the colors are for beauty and to help YOU focus.

Color is very important in candle magic. Color has subtle influences and each one vibrates at a different frequency. Because of the different effects of color on the human psyche and the surrounding environment, different colored candles are used for different magical end-results

All that basic Candle Magick requires is a candle and your will to make it work. It can take 7 minutes or 7 days to work full candle burning rituals, and candle burning Magick is very easy to do! There are as many ways to do a candle burning spell or ritual as there are people who do them. They are charming and simple, and can stand alone or be a small part of a larger, more elaborate undertaking.

The first step in creating your personal candle ritual is choosing your candle. Any size or shape candle will work, but it should be a “virgin” candle-that is, one that has never been used. I recommend keeping a good selection of different candles on hand in a special cabinet or box reserved for your Magickal use-grabbing the leftover one from last night’s dinner really is not the best way to approach things!

I have a friend of mine when she sees an unusual candle or even a candle holder that has a special magical significance, she will buy it, of course depending upon her budget.  She has a cabinet dedicated to holding ritual candles that are new.  And she even, once she has meditated upon their possible use, label them for that use.

No matter what the candle that you use in ritual and spell work, the candle(s) must be new, never use candles that have already been used---you will confuse the energies.  And after spell work, it is important to properly and ritually dispose of these candles.

After I list the figure candles, I will do postings on the types of Jar Candles, then how to dress a candle, how to interpret how a candle reacts or talks, finally how to dispose of a used candle.  To complete all of this I will list the best basic books that cover candle magic as my final post on this focused subject.   All this will take time so do be patient.

FIGURE CANDLES PART 2—

M to Z

•"Male Member" (Penis)  and "Female Member" (Vulva) Also known as “Gender Candles”  -- relating to the sexual behavior

- White to attract a new sex partner and to purify the genital organs,

Pink for romantic sex or to turn a friend into a lover,

Red to induce lust and passion, hot sex, increase desires

Blue to bring fidelity or limit their sexual interest to the practitioner only or to bring healing to the genital organs,

Black to control a person's ability to perform or to deal with problems with sex

Yellow for devotion,

Pink for romance.

- Marriage -  See Bride and Groom

•"Master Hand Candle" (hand holding a pillar candle) -- burned to gain control over a situation.   This is a particularly hard candle to find now a days, not too many spiritual supply places offer them.

Green and yellow for control over finances,

Pink and red for control over love situations,

Blue and white for healing and blessing spells.

Memorial Candles --- These are usually the very largest of the votive candles they can be without a glass jar and just in a candle hold but it is safer to use the ones that come in a glass jar. Ordinarily they are lit at midnight or sunrise to honor a birthday or anniversary or to remember a deceased loved one.
White is usually preferred.   I will refer to this type of candle in my next post on Jar candles.

Moon-shape candles---Usually crescent shape to be used for  Lunar magick.  Can replace Goddess figure in Goddess rituals. Use shape that corresponds to the aspect of the goddess IE: right hand crescent for maiden, Full for mother/lover, left hand crescent for waning or crone/wise woman.
Mummy---
Shaped like a mummy in an Egyptian sarcophagus , this candle is used primarily in a spell for power and success as well as protection as well as dealing  with or remove problems and situations that still linger from the past, even past lives, although many prefer to use it to ward off illness, dangerous situations, or the specter of death.
Anoint with Mummy Oil and place on an altar along with a burner filled with Power Incense. Light the incense first and allow it to burn for ten to fifteen minutes, while you concentrate on the project at hand. Then light the candle and repeat this chant several times: As the fragrance rises ever loftier, as the light glows ever lovelier, banish the forces which hinder my way, light the path to victory this day.

Red – power & success; for matters of business, property, for control over a situation and all other tangible possessions,  it is excellent for communication issues as well, and that goes for any kind of communication, not only with a loved one, but with a difficult manager at work, a friend, family member etc.

. Here are a few positive examples:

* You are planning a business project or any kind of project with someone who has a lot of different things on the go. You can use this candle to help that person focus their energy on the project at hand.

* You have an issue at work where you feel like you don't get heard at meetings and brain storming sessions - use this candle to help clear the way for your ideas to be heard.

Black--  Uncrossing & Jinx Removing and for family matters, relationships, bad mojo, curses, jinxes, hexes and emotion or emotional  problems from the past as well as  binding spells, and are also burned for occult power. Additionally, Mummy Candles may be used as doll-babies or "Voodoo Dolls” The Black Mummy candle spell's possibilities are almost endless and this candle magick is appropriate for any purpose in which you wish to send darkness, despair and bad luck.

Some people have gone so far as to do a Mummy curse such as recited in the 1930’s movie “the Mummy”  “May death come upon swift wings…”

Reversible Mummy Candle Black on the outside, red on the inside. Many use this to burn off and repel the dark forces and then attract the good spirits however it can be used as a strong revenge candle that wreaks havoc on whomever it is burned upon, either living on earth or dead in the Spirit World, if used for this purpose then use with extreme caution.

White Mummy candle-- This mummy candle functions to clean up ill effects from negative communication, stop fighting, heal communication, control communication in a strongly positive way especially when communication has been poor or negative and much more! Heal someone else who has difficulty with communication. Also, you can use it on yourself to protect yourself from gossip, slander, negative thoughts from others, etc.  As a candle to stop gossip, slander etc. it is an excellent candle

Special Note:  When using the Mummy Candle for any negative workings especially a “death type” curse be extremely cautions, it could come back to hurt you and your loved ones.

Novena Candle--these can be open flame candles placed into a special holder but  generally, this is a seven- to twelve-day, glass-enclosed candle. Frequently it is inscribed with pictures of various Saints along with prayers or chants on the reverse.  See Jar Candles in my next post.

For your immediate information I will give you the basic information here to start---
Seven-Day Novena: This long-burning candle is housed within a thick, heat resistant glass, and comes in three varieties: Plain Novena, the Spiritual Novena, and the Specialty Novena. Each comes unscented and in a variety of colored wax and glass casings.  The different one’s dedicated to Saints will be discussed in the next post on Jar Candles.

     Type of Novena candles----

•Plain Novena: This is an unmarked Seven-Day Candle found in a variety of colors.

•Spiritual Novena: This candle comes with various depictions of Saints or Holy Personages on the glass container along with specific prayers or petitions to that Saint. The scene in which the Saint is depicted is usually a clue as to the Saint's power and use.

•Specialty Novena: This candle is made of specific colors and sports specific designs on the glass container. It is named for the various actions it is to perform, and is often confused with the Novelty Candle. Remember, Novelty Candles do not come in glass containers and are not necessarily cylindrically shaped.
SEE ALSO OFFETORY CANDLES AND PROTECTION CANDLES

Offertory Candle: This is the name for the main candle that offers your desires, goals, or wishes out to the Universe for manifestation.  This can be an open flame set into a candle holder or a glass enclosed candle (see post on Jar candles) It is some times referred to in some spells or rituals as a Purpose Candle.   These are indifferent colors and/or shapes or designs depending upon your focus.

OMPALOS CANDLE Also known as Snake candle (See Snake Candle)    this candle offers the image of a snake, coiling around the length of the candle from top to bottom. This represents many meanings in ritual use, allowing the candle to be used in anything from spells of deceit to spells of protection and to spells of renewal and spells of revenge. With so many uses, it is certain to be a Powerful Spell breaker to send back evil intentions.

When BLACK - Rid evil or break a spell

When RED - Break up a love affair

The black snake candle in its Ompalos mode, may also be used in workings of seeking hidden wisdom and aquiring knowledge in specific matters within your life.

Black represents hidden wisdom and power, much like the Yezidi sacred black serpent.

The red serpent represents Shakti or the Fire serpent or illuminator of wisdom. An Adept may use the Black and Red candles to represent the Black and Red Serpents of Luciferianism - Samael and Lilith. This is classic of the OD/OB power of the serpent as the bringer of wisdom, Apollo and other Gods who have the power of divination.

If you are a novice for this type of advance working then do not attempt.

Ompalos or Snake Candle Reversible - this reversible snake image candle is black on the outside and red on the inside. Burn candle to turn your luck around, bring good luck to you and turn back evil. For this positive purpose is a good candle to have.

Owl Candle:   For wisdom and insight. This is a hard candle to find, but can be found in many different colors and either as one or more owls, if found in a single color then the wisdom and insight would be related to that candle color meaning, the best of course is brown, but sometimes you may find them fully decorated as an Owl.  If you find it unburned at a Yard, Estate, or rummage or church bizarre sale, rinse carefully with cold water, allow it to completely dry away from sun and heat (usually a week) then fumigate it with sage but making sure you don't melt it.  This way it becomes purified for you magickal workings.

Praying Hands Candle---   Burn praying hands candle to heal a person who is sick. As they say Faith can works miracles! (But I also recommend seeing a Doctor or going to the hospital)  Dress candle with Healing Oil. Write your petition and place in a dish of Holy Water. Read Psalm 30 and concentrate on your request. This can also work the same as the Guardian Angel Candle if you cannot find a Guardian Angel candle, it’s usually in white

(Special Note: Prayer can help a person to heal, but also if it is that person’s time to join God, then it can be used to give strength to those left behind and help the soul reach heaven, sometimes as my Granny use to say “God will call us home, when it’s that time” )

Protection Candle: A candle of any shape and size. The color here is what counts.
Burn a White candle or a Saint Candle whenever doing destructive Magick (banishing disease, for example) to protect yourself from harm.
Also use Silver if you are doing destructive Magick against another person who also knows Magick.
Should your Magick return unexpectedly, neutralize it with a gray candle.

Special Note:    Some Novena Candles are also considered Protection Candles.
San Capistrano to keep away enemies;
Saint Anthony for a job;
Saint Jude for court problems;
Sacred Heart for Marriage;
Santa Clara for drug and addiction problems;
Saint Michael for general protection, especially if you have a loved one in the military or police force.
Whenever using the Saints, always write down your desire nine times on parchment and tape it to the candle bottom---This will be covered again in my post on Jar candles.

Pyramid Candles— usually used to either win court cases or money petition especially if designed with an eye on it.  Sometimes scented, sometimes not scented   Aligns with higher planes energies. Excellent for banishing and drawing.  Write your complete wish on the bottom.

On each side of the pyramid  write the word or phrase that describes how your wish would affect the four levels of your awareness. When dressing this candle bring the oil downward from the tip to the base and picture the energy entering the candle and grounding into your life.

If using it to rid your life of something dress the candle from base to tip.

Using ritual dove`s blood ink, write a petition for the favor you want on parchment paper or brown paper and place it under this candle. As the candle burns it will draw your desired result to you or banish it from you.  Again depending upon your intent.

Blue with Jasmine scent, win court cases and lawsuits

Green with Cherry scent, to draw money quickly and fast luck

Red with Cinnamon scent, come to me or to hold lover close

White with Strawberry scent, peace, good health and healing

Brown has also been used for court cases or to get out of jail and have charges dismissed.

You can use these candles with or without a scent in it, unscented maybe better because then you can anoint them with an oil that is more specific to you needs.  See Also "Eye on Pyramid" candle.

Rebirthing Candle: A candle, with three or more days of burning time that is used to guide the dead across to peace and rest.  Usually a very thick white pillar candle which for safety sake should be placed in a large glass holder such as the types referred to as Hurricane glass holders.  This should be started from the moment of death or notified of death to one day after burial if possible.  If following a natural burial (without embalming) or are planning Cremation then burn for three days and nights praying for the soul of the departed to find their way to the light, heaven, the summer land or what your religious beliefs refer to the afterlife so that they can be born into their new, spiritual life.

Reversible Candle ---- these are basically red in color, and dipped so that the outer surface is covered in black. The symbolism is obvious--burn away the dark, harmful elements and expose the bright energizing vibrations which emit from the red center. Anoint the candles with Reversible Oil and burn for an hour daily until the negative forces which have enveloped you are broken and the powers of light are given their opportunity to spread those soothing, enlightening rays throughout your life.  Reversible Candles can come in figure candles, from human image to cross, to snake to skull or other shapes depending upon intent, but plain shape Reversible Candles work just as well as an reversible image candle.

San Cipriano Candle   Named for the patron saint of Witches, Conjurers, Root Doctors, and spiritual workers, Saint Cipriano (or San Cipriano) was known both for being a powerful sorcerer who consorted with demons and wrote a powerful book of spells as well as for becoming a pious Bishop of the Roman church after his conversion to Christianity.  Usually the candle is molded or carved into the Saint`s image, and will help empower your prayer rituals. Sometimes this candle is presented as a Jar candle with the saint’s image on it.

Obtain this candle either in white or red, never get it in black.

Saint Jude or San Judus Tadeo, this candle is intended to aid you in your prayers to Saint Jude to aid in overcoming desperate situations, since he is the Saint of desperate or lost causes.  Should you overcome the situation you need to put a notice in the paper thanking him as well as making a donation in his name.  Many people donate money to St. Jude Hospital in the United States, since it focuses on helping children who are dying of cancer and other incurable diseases, this hospital works on treatments to help cure children as well as finding a cure for what is believed to be incurable diseases.

Santisima Muerte (Santa Muerte, Holy Death) Angel of Death Figure Candle

Santa Muerte is a Goddess (or God is called as Azrael) of Sorcery,  There are rituals for prosperity, justice (court cases), protection from harm, enemies, spiritual focusing, attraction of a lover, cursing enemies and more, She may also reverse curses as well.

Santisima Muerte / Holy Death image candles have been used in ancient times. The Holy Death figure is one of the most powerful and well used icons. With this image candle you will be able to do rituals that relate to love, money, crossing, uncrossing and more.   Holy Death Candles should be made according to dimensions, original formula and authentic materials appropriate for ceremonies, practices and magic rituals, esoterism, spiritualism, Santeria, VooDoo, mayombe stick, hexings and sortileges

Black - Destroying, Commanding, binding, Domination, Do As I Say, Spirit communication

Red - Love, Friendship, Marriage, Passion and Attraction rituals

Her candles and statues can be found in other colors as well, each one for a specific purpose, but be very careful calling upon her or setting up an altar to her, she can be jealous.  There is a prescribed way of setting her altar, doing offerings, and her prayers.  If you seek to call upon her, study her worship very carefully, otherwise she will make you wish you were never born.

•"Seven Knob Wishing Candle" (flattened spheres stacked seven-high) -- burned on seven days, for seven different wishes or for seven-fold strength on the same wish, one knob or flattened sphere per day.  But usually make a wish and burn one knob each day for seven days. Write your wish on parchment paper and place beneath the candle. Before lighting the candle each time, recite this chant seven times: Candle, Candle, burning bright, Bless this wish with your light.

-- White for healing, peace in the home or business

Black to do evil or to banish a negative person or situation to stop bothersome people or habits

Green for money spells, get a job, success, luck

Red for love spells and help in relationships;

Snake Candle---

Snake candles are burned for protection from all evil. The purpose of the snake candle is to acknowledge that there are light and dark forces in all things, and the evil influences must be negated before the good can blossom and take over. Anoint the Snake candle with Protection Oil and use it once a month to keep the home free from all harm.
Star Candles--- Can be used as a wishing candle “Star Light, Star Bright first star I see tonight, I wish I may I wish I might, have the wish I wish tonight” can be effective depending upon color and what oils it is “dressed” with.

Triple Action Candle--- This  3 color candle can be i packed with strong energies that help you gain true love, stop evil, bring peace and spiritual blessings to your home or  draw money depending upon with 3 color combination you select. Use this to balance and unblock all money, spiritual and love problems!
It is found in these two triple color combinations:
Red, White and Blue --
Use for Love, Spiritual Blessing and Peaceful Home or  returning lovers, and for protection and legal work.

Red, White and Green ---Use for Love, Spiritual Blessing and Good Luck or success, prosperity and luck.
The intent of the color combination lies with you.

To use a triple-action candle, you can burn them plain or choose an appropriate dressing oil (or a mixture of  3  oils one for each specific purpose) for your magical work. Since these are candles used to attract positive influences, they should be dressed upward, or else in the half-up half-down style as instructed in Gamache's Candle Burning Book. Candles are typically inscribed (using a small, sharp object like a pin or a coffin nail depending upon intent) with your intention or else set over a piece of paper on which you've written your desire. If your goal is to compel love from a certain person, it's typical to write just the names of the couple-to-be.

There are two minds of thought on burning a triple action candle---

The first is to burn it all at once--once lit let it burn because to some practioners why burn it in section  as that seems to defeat the potency of the spell work at that rate you might as well burn 3 separate candles for each purpose.

But other practioners feel that Triple action candles should be  burned in sections for three days.
Personally I feel that once dressed with all three oils and with three incense burners with the appropriate incense for each action to get in and focus it all at once.
But that is up to the individual either way this is what you will need.

- 1 Triple Action Candle

- 3 Condition Oils
- 3 Types Of Incense
-  3 Incense Burners if burning at one time, if doing it on 3 separate days then just one burner.

- Coffin Nail or pin

- Name-Paper or Petition Paper

- Candle Holder
Procedure:  (This one described is for Money and to be burned over three separate days---but it will work if burning all at once, and for other intentions depending upon the oils, incense and intent)

Take the coffin nail or pin and carve a short phrase or symbol into each colored section of the candle.
For example carve a heart on the red portion, an eye on the white portion, and a dollar sign ($) on the green portion. Take the Love-Drawing oil and place a few drops in one's palm. Rub one's hands together and dress the candle toward one's self. Next take the Protection oil and do the same thing. Follow this with the Money-Drawing oil. Place the name paper on the work surface, place the candle holder on top of the name-paper, and place the candle in the candle holder. Light Love-Drawing incense and then pray and concentrate/visualize one's desires. Light the candle. When the red portion has burned away put out the candle by wetting one's fingers with saliva and pinching out the flame.  If doing this over a 3 day period never blow the candle our.
On the next day burn Protection incense, pray, and then relight the candle. When the white portion of the candle has burned away wet one's fingers and pinch the candle out again. On the third and final day, light Money-Drawing incense, pray, and then relight the candle. Let the candle extinguish itself naturally.
Otherwise if not doing it over a three day period do the same thing and let the candle burn down and extinguish itself naturally in a safe and secure place.

Unicorn: protect innocents, and connect with the magickal and faery realms also hard to find, see Owl candle if you get lucky in finding an unburned one 2nd hand.  I wanted one time to get in touch with some nature spirits for my garden and sprinkled silver and gold glitter on it, for 5 years my garden was easy to maintain and bloomed beautifully, almost weed free.

Unity Candle----See Adam and Eve

Vigil Candle: Any candle will suffice when burnt not only for a long period of time for another's benefit but also to peacefully demonstrate for a cause or action.
Witch Candle---Write your petition on parchment paper with Dragon´s Blood Ink and place under candle.  It’s various uses run from love, protection, moon magic to sinister things---intent is the focus.

BLACK - use in wiccan meditation or dark moon, protection or to cause harm & confusion to enemies

RED - For potent love spells, anoint with Come to Me Oil

I have never seen this style candle in other colors except those two.

Wizard: Spirit guide and spirit guardian spells.  Again an unusual candle to find, (see Owl if find unburned at yard sale) Usually you will find it as if it were complete designed as a wizard figure, but if you find it in one color see what color it is to determine the type of word.

Zodiac or Astrological Candle: This candle is used to represent each of the twelve signs of the Zodiac. It is specifically colored, scented, and adorned with the information pertinent to the individual sign. Its use, normally in conjunction with other candles, is to represent your goal or target. The Zodiac Candle would be placed on the altar and then moved closer to the target candle to simulate the merging of the two.
Usually Zodiac or Astrological Candles are encased in glass aka Jar candles. See my next post on Jar Candles.

With any candle be it pillar, figure, jar or what ever, intent and will is what will generate the energy, the imagery, the colors help focus that intent and will.
But as with anything----if you seek only to do harm without justification or out of spite, or maliciousness, or even jealousy be prepared to have it come back on you.  Also just burning a candle and doing prayers are fine except you must remember The Devine Presence/God/Goddess will help those who will also help themselves.
If you seek love but are slovenly, don't expect love to come to you, if you seek money but don't work don't expect money to come to you, if you want justice but don't seek legal advice don't expect justice to come to you.
However on a spiritual level if your intent is honest, and in physical ways work at things, you can have good things come to you.  But don't be obvious about it.
For example at my job I had a co-worker that I disliked intensely, his energy just did not mesh well with mine, his attitude was off-putting and other things that were repellant to me, but I wanted to be fair in working with him, and did my best to work in harmony with him, but there were things that he'd do that would undo all my work.

I could have gotten angry and blown up at him but he had worked it so that everyone else was charmed by him, so I just smiled and worked my best with him taking care never to reveal my true feelings about him to anyone, the worst that I would say is "Oh sometimes we see things differently"
But what I did do was a reversing Skull Candle so that his true nature would be revealed, oh there was more, I had to chose carefully what oil I'd use, carefully write out my petition and such.  As a matter of fact I had to do more than one reversing Skull Candle it was pretty hard but bit by bit his true nature was revealed and he was transferred to a different department and then eventually let go.
That is what I mean to not be obvious about it, keep that mask on, act normal and don't even let them suspect what you're doing.
With Praying Hands, Cross, Star or Guardian Angel Candles if burned in a more public area of your home they will be seen as being Friendly and non-threatening---with the others I'd be more circumspect.

Next I will list the Jar Candles.
