Celebrating Mid-Summer or the Summer Solstice~~~

Hello Everyone

I’ve been sort of ignoring Wicca (modern witchcraft) when I speak of conjure, because Wicca to many is really a religion with magical workings.   And in doing the type of work that I do it's really a practice without any particular religious affiliations except when I call upon the energy of the Saints, although some would say that many of the saints are christian representations of those in voodoo,  to me that does not matter because it is an energy, a thinking energy and to call upon them you do have to give respect no matter what.

But I'm not going to talk about that what I am going to talk about is Mid-Summer.

Today is the first day of Summer also called Mid-Summer and also called Litha.

The word Litha may come from Saxon tradition -- the opposite of Yule. This longest day of the year, as well as the shortest night and it seems to be the high of all that is life affirming, many crops are at their peak getting ready to harvest.  In my yard the cherry, plum and apricot trees are full with fruit, and my family has been and is picking them,   much to be eaten, and a lot to preserve.

In Wicca the Goddess is ripe with her fullness and the Green God sits on his throne.   The Christians adopted this time to assign it to St. John the Baptist, because with his baptizing of Jesus it was announced spiritually that the Christ was ready to give his message to the world, in the Bible it is said that a voice came out of the clouds that said “This is my beloved son whom I am well pleased”.    The light of the world at its highest.

The significance of this day between “Pagans” and Christians is that it Marks the ancient middle of Summer, and the astronomical beginning of Summer, the Christians adopted it to convert the pagans by making it the nativity of St. John the Baptist.

The celebration of Midsummer's Eve (St. John's Eve among Christians) was from ancient times a festival of the summer solstice. Bonfires were lit to protect against evil spirits which were believed to roam freely when the sun was turning southward again.   There are so many meanings surrounding this day which really can be from June 19 to June 25, that it is impossible for me to list.

So I’m going to have Wikipedia explain it with this link:

Now among Wiccans there are various ways to celebrate, I’m going to give you some web sites that speak of what it’s all about and how to celebrate it:   The Celtic Connection  The Goddess and the Green Man

Either way it is a time of beginning to harvest and put up and preserve your fruits and vegetables, but mostly to gather your herbs and start drying them because the herbs have reached their full growth.

In my family it was and is the perfect time to go to the County Fair and see what is being developed for home use as well as buying newly hatched chicks to augment the flock that my granny had to prevent in-breeding.

But it also signaled that it was time to start putting up our foods to have available during the winter months.   One of my Uncles would also make plum wine and apricot and cherry brandy,  good for what ails you he used to say.   So from this time (if not a little earlier) it was the start of harvesting, and our way of also celebrating by going to the county fair and here in the United States the 4th of July for parades and picnics.

My family still does it to this day, because if you are lucky to own a home with a fair size back yard, if you want shade trees then plant fruit trees, you get more “bang for the buck.”

Granny had an apple tree that grew to a great size and she had her chicken yard shaded under that tree, the droppings from the chicken’s fertilized it and she’d have a moveable chicken run set up to move to different parts of her yard so she could take advantage of the natural fertilizer to grow crops.

For those of you who are not into putting up your own take advantage of the Farmer’s market and stock up,  if you want to celebrate you will find, if you look carefully, all kinds of celebrations and parades, go to the County Fair and see a lot of old-fashion ways of doing things, or find a historical home that gives demonstrations on old-fashioned living by the seasons.

This is a good time to get in tune with the seasons of the year and set your internal clock by it.

Now if you live in the southern hemisphere it would be winter down there so you would be doing Yule type celebrations, since the seasons are reversed,  check those web sites that I have listed for what kind of celebrations to do during your reversed holidays.

And this is a perfect day to take stock of what you have in your magical cabinet, herbs, oils, powders, dust, and candles,  so this would be a perfect time to re-stock your cabinet.

Now I also briefly mention in one of my posts about collecting water on St. John’s Day (check the Christian Calendar) and I will repeat it here:

One of Granny's Ladies in her group was a Mrs. Washington, she lived in Louisiana and learned a lot of what some people would call Hoodoo from a number of the practitioners who lived around, some she traveled to, to learn things from and some she discovered were just down right frauds, but those that she learned from was, as we would say now a days, "The Real Deal".

She was very big on collecting River Water on St. John's Day in June (June 24th) she'd  collect river water and put it into a glass bottle, and bring it home,   June 24 is the Nativity of St. John the Baptist.

She told me that ST. JOHN'S WATER is a wonderful extra protection for a person and their home.

She said it was a tradition, especially in (but not restricted to) the New Orleans area, to collect St. John's Water every year on St. John's Day. This water is protective; it wards off evil and keeps the one who collects and keeps it, secure and safe from harm.

You take a clean dark colored glass bottle with a lid, this is one of those times when a metal lid or cap is fine. Be sure to wash it first as you would with any of the bottles you'd use to hold your collected waters, and then let it dry so that the washing water will not "contaminate" the river water you collect.

Carrying your bottle, go to a river in your area.  Rivers are the right body of water to use.  We are, dealing with St. John the Baptist, who baptized in the Jordan River.

You have to recite prayers, first saying a prayer of contrition asking to be forgiven for your sins, then say the traditional Lord's Prayer for the blessings for the year to come.

Then ask St. John the Baptist for his help and blessings, he who was so intimately aware of the spiritual power of rivers.  Then fill your bottle, cap it, and take it home with you.

Set this bottle on its side by the hinge side of your front door, so that it is a bit hidden from those who come to your door.  Make sure that the neck of the bottle is facing the door.  Keep the bottle in this position throughout the year.

If anyone comes to your door who you do not wish to deal with, anyone who may make life difficult for you  - or even if you are just worried that they may come to trouble you - simply roll that bottle with your foot.

Roll it back and forth on the floor, as you concentrate on exactly what you want especially what you want to say to the person to get them to leave. Then when they leave and you close the door roll the bottle right back into its original position, where it will continue to guard and defend your home for the remainder of the year.

Remember when requesting the aid of any saint, including St. John the Baptist be sure to thank him for his assistance.

Just remember to renew this bottle of River Water every year on St. John's Day.

So however you want to celebrate or make use of the Summer Soltice or Mid-Summer, it's all up to you, use it to get started in your "workings", putting your magical cabinet together or your book of spells, however you want to do it.  Either way it's a good first step.

Bright Blessings,
Ms. Q

What is the difference and uses between Licorice Root and Calamus Root.....

Hello Everyone,

Not too long ago, but unfortunately while I was in the care facility with my broken ankle I was asked about Calamus and Licorice Root,  what are they used for or how can they be used.

And I'm getting questions from my family members as well about herbs as they come up to the point where I'm getting a little overwhelmed.

So I am going to post from time to time about different herbs some which you can grow and some which you can purchase.

So let's start with these two, Calamus and Licorice Root-----

Both are herbs but each has their own different properties in the use of Conjure, yet both are used in either for controlling or dominating others, so in some ways they are very much the same and yet there are some differences.

Licorice Root is used to gain power over and control of someone (an individual) that would include to change their mind.

Calamus Root is used primarily to control a situation as well as or dominate a person.

Calamus is seen more often in spells and rituals than Licorice because by some it’s considered the softer “sister” between the two.   Calamus exerts a more sweeter, subtle, compelling control while Licorice is more of a stern-demanding control.   They are both potent roots in the use of control and some practitioners like to use them together, but they can be used separately depending upon what kind of control one wants to exert.

However some practitioners feel that the reverse is also correct,  my Granny use to say that sometimes some herbs, plants or roots seem to work differently with each practitioner,   it’s what works best for you and you can only find out when you use them individually.  But most prefer to use them together.

So let’s talk about the different properties of Calamus Root and Licorice Root:
Let’s start with Calamus Root:

Calamus Root, also known as Sweet Flag, is a perennial root herb that grows in some parts of Europe, Asia and North America.  It’s mentioned in the book of Exodus and is supposed to be one of the ingredients in ritual incense. The Bible also mentions about the root’s stimulating and visionary effect. This visionary effect was also recognized by the Native Americans, who considered the herb sacred. The Ancient Chinese believed that Calamus put one’s energy into balance, allowing one to resonate as a whole. They would chew on Calamus root while breathing deeply, fully and slowly to make anxiety and panic subside.
(Personally I would not do that because there may be some unknown effects that could adversely affect a person)

It is alleged by conjure workers that using this root gives to the worker or user, control over a person or situation. Because of this belief it is a common ingredient in formulas and spells used for controlling others, and it put into oils and powders including Commanding,  Bend-Over, and Follow Me Boy as well as some love formulas.

It can be used in a conjure or mojo bag filled with other Love-Herbs, so that a person, man or woman, can be Dominate in a Love Affair.  Other uses is burning it as an incense while doing a domination candle-spell or to mix it with Commanding Powder then sprinkle it around a room where they will meet with someone they want or wish to control, command or dominate, some people will put it into a mojo bag before going into a mediation situation so they will get their own way.  (especially in divorce cases)

It is known for other spell uses in healing, balance, protection, luck and prosperity. Growing the plant in your garden is said to bring good luck and aids in the protection of the property.  It is claimed that using Calamus root gives protection against an enemy.

To use to increase good luck and attract abundance and help in healing and protection of a person or property, sprinkle the powdered root around the outside perimeter of your home or property to protect from robbers.

Another way to increase one’s finances is to cut up dried calamus root and place them in the corners of the rooms of your house or business to ensure that you have more than enough money when you are worrying about your finances.

On a more practical level it is believe to also discourage fleas and other unwanted pests.  Some years ago a friend of mine lived in Taiwan and his housekeeper would put up here and there around the house  calamus grass tied together in small bundles and outside their doors in the summer months especially during the Dragon Boat Festival to protect the house from a summer pestilence.  He told me that parts of Taiwan can be very swampy, considering that it’s a subtropical country and during the summer months various diseases develop in various towns and villages.  It was traditionally believed that putting these bundles would keep the “sickness” away---the Chinese called calamus “shi chang pu.”

Mrs. Washington who use to live in the South, told me of how she and her Mama would also use calamus as a wash (boiled in hot water) and would wash down their steps and floors and put finely cut pieces all around the house and at the window screens.   The story about Brer Rabbit’s mojo hand could have been a form of keeping fleas and misquotes off of a person, much like how my granny would use eucalyptus leaves under her rugs to keep fleas away.

It can also be used or burned as an incense to encourage spiritual, emotional and physical healing.

Because Calamus is used for control, many practitioners do not like to use it in a honey jar or a marriage spell because if you use it in a love spell you would be using it to control and dominate the other person.  But if you do then such a honey jar would just have a more controlling/dominating bent to it but you have to remember that it would be interfering with the other person’s free will.

On the medical side Calamus root was considered medicinal.  Some herbalists would powder the root and mix it into a glass of white wine to help settle an upset stomach. Chewing the candied roots would help soothe a sore throat or calm a persistent cough but only get this from a licensed herbalist, it is not wise to self-medicate.

In herbal use medical science has on and off listed Calamus root as being toxic, that is if a lot of it is ingested, if that happens then it encourages the growth of cancerous tumors,  but if taken only in very small doses and only occasionally one should not have that problem---but again do not self-medicate and only get from a licensed herbalist.

Because of this Calamus root is banned or prohibited in some countries or states because of this possible toxic reaction, if you find that it is banned in your area you can substitute Licorice-root, Cubeb Berries, Master Root or Knot-weed.

If you like to grow an herb garden, planting and growing Calamus would make a great addition.

Now let’s talk about Licorice Root:

This root is used for flavoring and also in herbal medicine.  It’s magical properties in control or dominating is much like Calumus Root and would be used the same way.   So except for the type of domination or control that you want there is very little difference in its application.

The root of the Licorice tree must be used in dried form. The first candies were made using Licorice and the process was quite simple then, simply boiling the Licorice and then adding some sugar and anise oil after its been boiled after a while. The reason to use anise oil as an addition is to improve the taste of the licorice root since its original state the taste is quite delicate.  I have chewed Licorice root and it is flavorful but light and not over whelming.

Licorice root medically relieves coughs and arthritis. There are various uses of the root especially as an herbal medicine. The root has been compared to codeine when it comes to stopping coughs and bringing up phlegm to clear the lungs. In China, the Licorice root is used in the treatment for arthritis as they claim it has essential anti-inflammatory components better known as saponins. The root helps in the cure of bronchitis and colds especially when taken in the form of a special tea.  I’ve known some people to chew the root to bring relief to mild ulcers---but its best to get professional help for ulcers.

Sometimes it’s used as a tranquilizer and allegedly balances nervous system and stimulates liver functions. But be careful drinking it as a tea or eating it in long term usage (over 3 months) it could cause liver damage.

On the other hand, the root has been associated with enhancement of fertility and increase of sexual energy among the humans and is used to bind love charms.

Now to the practical side of Licorice root especially if you want to grow it:

Licorice (sometimes spelled  Liquorice)  come from the root of Glycyrrhiza glabra, from which a sweet flavor can be extracted. The licorice plant is a legume related to beans and peas and is native to southern Europe and parts of Asia. It is not related to Anise, Star Anise or Fennel, which are the source of superficially similar flavoring compounds.

It is an herbaceous perennial, growing to 3 feet in height, the flowers are purple to pale whitish blue.  Licorice grows best in deep, fertile, well-drained soils, with full sun, and is harvested in the autumn, two to three years after planting.   In modern times, liquorice extract is produced by boiling licorice root and subsequently evaporating most of the water. In fact, the name 'liquorice'/'licorice' is derived from the Old French licoresse and from the Ancient Greek glukurrhiza, meaning 'sweet root'.

I knew of a young lady that had been affected by the use of both roots and she wanted to get free, so Granny did the 13 herb uncrossing bath on her,  after the 13th day (it was one bath a day) we did the Egg Cleansing spell, in the meantime my uncle went to see the guy who was dominating her, on a pretext about doing some work, when the fellow wasn’t looking my uncle put some hot foot powder on the threshold of the guy’s house.   Then Granny did a dominating spell on the guy so he’d leave the girl alone and leave town.   It worked but it took a little time.      Then she created a poppet or doll of the girl so that anything attempted to be done on the young lady would not affect her.   As I said it took time but it worked.

In doing the work Licorice much the same as Calamus Root, but again it depends upon what kind of spell or ritual work you want to do,  sometimes it’s best to use only a little instead of a lot just to be a sweet and gentle persuader.

But you have to remember that if you want to force someone to fall in love with you, and it really is not meant to be, then you are interfering with someone’s free will and it can backlash on you, so again think carefully on what you want to do.

Bright Blessings,
Ms. Q

Have removed post of "Candle Colors and their Meanings"

Hello Everyone,

I removed the original post of "Candle Colors and their Meanings"   and the only thing listed is the reference guide to Candle Colors which also includes mention of the double action candles which is on my links portion of this Blog.

But I seem to have a problem.

The original post that I deleted is now appearing as a "ghost post" on the internet, which will give me some problems.  And it also means that if anyone finds that post on the internet, I will not be able to respond to anyone who posts a question on it.

I am not computer savvy to remove it so I will have to hope for the best and trust that those who do post on it by accident are not insulted if I do not reply.

I guess the idea of a "Ghost in the Machine" really does exist.  (Sigh)

And I am almost caught up with all the questions that had been posted while I was at the hospital and care facility.

So now as I teach my family members and have fun with coffee with my fellow practitioners (Marla you make the most wonderful cranberry-orange scones Yum!)  I am making notes to write articles for the blog and hope to have more soon.

Father's Day is coming this weekend and we are planning a bar-be-que as it's going to be toasty warm.   It's a perfect reason for the family to come together.

Bright Blessings,

Replies to questions posted on "Candle Colors and their Meanings" those of you who posted under that please read.

Hello Everyone,

Well it looks like I'm going to have to delete the "Candle Colors and their Meanings" Post because people keep posting questions to that post and Blog Spot will not post their questions because it is maxed out.

I really hate having to do that work,

So now I have 3 questions that were posted that will not come up under that post and I'm going to have to post their questions and my replies here----for everyone to read.

I'm sorry that I have to do that but I have no choice because I don't want to seem as if I am ignoring you,  but sometimes problems do happen.

After I Post this in the next day or two I will delete that post and do a new one.

Here are the questions that were asked-----

This one is from "Mark"

Hello Blessings, Ms Q

Dear Mark,

When you openly challenged him you had given some of your personal power to him,  but you can take it back.

It’s an old trick for someone to tell someone else that they’ve done a hex on you so that the other person will tell it to you, then when something difficult or bad happens you then believe that it was the hex or curse put on you by the original person, when really it’s because you’ve lost confidence.  You are going through a bad period in your life, and this knowledge (the hex) has shaken your confidence.

I went through a period of 5 years when I lost 10 family members, it was like every 6 months I was going to a funeral, but when I looked it over I realized that for some members their deaths were inevitable, with others it was their own careless actions.  We all go through difficult times.

So don’t put it entirely on your Uncle, part of it is also you.  And you have got to get that confidence back.

Read my articles on Shield, Warding, Protection, railroad spikes, Cleansing spell, Cleansing your space first part physical cleansing, Egg Spell, 13 herb uncrossing bath, and black destroyer oil.  You will find them listed in my archives section.

Those articles will give you the information you need to protect yourself, and also to reverse things.

Then I want you to make a doll out of cloth, It doesn’t have to be fancy stuff it first with some cotton balls to fill it out then with personal items from you,  hair, a bit of spit and blood on a Kleenex, a few threads from the seams of some clothing that you wear often, put into it these herbs and items for protection a tiny piece of rose quartz, an amethyst, black onyx, Basil herb, patchouli,  fresh dry coffee grounds or beans, rosemary and sage,  then bless the doll giving it your name and ask it to protect you from whatever your Uncle is trying to do.  Wrap the doll in white cloth and put it in a safe place.

You should start to feel better after you make the doll, and do the uncrossing bath and the egg spell.

Your situation has giving me an idea to do an article on making dolls or poppets for protection and other situations.   Watch for it.

Bright Blessings,
Ms. Q

Here is one from Anonymous in regards to a Love situation

Hi Ms.Q, I hope you are feeling better and recovering. I have been in love with this guy almost for two years now, he always comes back and leaves. I feel we are meant to be together but I am unsure. I just have really bad luck at this and do not know what to do

on Candle Colors and their Meanings~~~Anonymous  on 4/30/17

Hello my Dear,

Thank you My Dear it is a long an slow process but I'm getting there.

It’s always best to do a card divination to see if it’s worth pursuing this matter and going through the effort of making the Honey Jar.

I drew a card for you and it was The Moon in reverse, that means that although you love him, he doesn’t love you and never will, his attention to you when he’s around is merely an illusion, his actions speak much louder,  he is all shadow no substance.

To be honest a person, especially a man who acts like a butterfly, (comes back and then leaves, back and leaves) tells me that this person is not serious in having a relationship and maybe a cheater, so I ask you do you really need that kind of heart-break?   Because even if he stays with you he will still cheat on you, the honey jar cannot prevent that if that is the man’s natural nature.   And the Moon card confirms it.

Do not waste your time or efforts in doing a Honey Jar, let him go, his love (if any) is not real and your feelings for him is really not real, only a crush, you can do much better, if he comes around enjoy it for the moment but don’t give up dating other men,  because eventually A Real Man will come into your life who truly loves you.

Bright Blessings,
Ms. Q

This one is from Natalie who saw a monster--what does it mean.

Hello and Good Morning To You Ms.Q,
I really don’t know where to start but here it goes.
My name is Natalie,I am 39,and I was born on May 19,1977. I am lost right now well actually I’ve been lost for a long time. I am an addict and I don’t know who I am, who I was as a child, I only remember very little, but do remember I got into a lot of trouble as a teenager. I don’t know if what I saw when I was spending the night at my dad’s house has meaning but I remember being on couch, all the dogs around started barking throwing a fits, sitting up to look out window to see if I could see anything, what I saw was something walking out of the darkness into the edge of yard light, not being able to move, to scream, or breath. It was a burnt red color, body as a man, walked on hooves, green eyes, and the head was that of a ram horns and all. I can see it so vividly now just as I did then. Truly Terrifying.
Do you have an idea as to what it was I saw, or maybe why I am such as I am? Please help me Ms. Queen

on Candle Colors and their Meanings~~~Anonymous  on 4/15/17

Dear Natalie,

I saw something like what you described but it was in a movie that was being shown on T.V. back in the 70’s.

It is possible that you had what is called a “waking dream” that is you are in a twilight state where you are sort of awake but still dreaming.   The dogs barking brought you out of deep sleep and brought you to the twilight state.

Some people would call it being between two worlds, if anything that dream was a warning to you to change and work on bettering yourself.   You say you are an addict, then it was warning you about how dangerous addiction can be, that it can lead you to a form of “hell.”

Images that we have seen either in the movies or on television have been known to remain implanted in our minds to be brought out later as symbols in our dreams.

I’ve had dreams where the wrestler “The Undertaker” was trying to defend me from some indefinable threat and it turned out to be different medical problems, it was my subconscious trying to tell me through the dream state that something was medically wrong with me and it took the form of that wrestler.

In another dream it was a vampire with a very white egg shape face, and that was a warning about a co-worker, again the subconscious warning through the dream state about a threat.

In your case it took the shape of a beast warning you, now you need to try and understand what it was warning you about, who you are right now is a woman who is trying to get back on track in life.   The fact that this dream has remain so vivid in your memory is your mind still trying to warn you that this devil is still riding your back.

Seek out a group therapy to talk and understand and work with the type of addiction you have, many of them work on the same principals as AA.

I have put you into my prayer circle.  Good Luck!

Bright Blessings,
Ms. Q

So now I have not ignored you, it's just that particular post was very popular to post questions, but now in the next day or two I will have to delete it and then later on re-post it.

I'm sorry that I have to do this as well as put your questions out here but I had no choice.

Now there are still many more questions to be answered some still as far back as March after I broke my ankle, please be patient I will get to them, just not as fast as I would like.

Bright Blessings,
An Exhausted Ms. Q
